1. The Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards – Part 1

In this course, we will introduce the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, following the recommendations from the Royal Commission to improve care. We will review the 7 strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, including person-centred care, clinical services, nutrition, and dementia-friendly environments. Then, we will examine the roles of aged care workers in meeting these standards through care plans, dementia training, feedback, and documentation, teaching them how to provide safe, high-quality care for diverse ageing individuals, utilising evidence-based mapping and monitoring tools.

  • Describe the purpose of the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
  • List the standards and explain how they ensure safe, high-quality, respectful care.
  • Identify the role of the aged care worker under the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.

2. The Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards – Part 2

In part 2 of this course, you will learn how to deliver high-quality, person-centred care under the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. First, we will review compliance and risk management strategies, covering the Aged Care Act and the Code of Conduct. Next, we will explore strategies for enhancing person-centred care practices, focusing on respect, dignity, and individual needs. Lastly, we will learn how to prepare for Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission audits, emphasising evidence collection and continuous improvement to ensure the safety and well-being of ageing individuals.

After this lesson you will be able to:

  • Describe compliance and risk management strategies for aged care workers under the Aged Care Act and Code of Conduct.

3. Preventing and Responding to Elder Abuse

In this course, you’ll learn about preventing and responding to elder abuse, including physical, emotional, financial, sexual, and neglectful actions that harm dignity and independence. We will examine the role of aged care workers in preventing and addressing elder abuse and explore methods for reporting elder abuse to safeguard ageing individuals effectively.

4. Understanding Choice, Independence and Quality of Life

In this course, we will explore the key concepts to enhance the lives of individuals through better care practices. Firstly, we’ll identify how choice and independence improve an individual’s quality of life, focusing on their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Next, we’ll discuss the Aged Care Act and how it supports greater independence by prioritising rights, dignity, and person-centred care. We will then explore independence and risk-taking, focusing on balancing safety with dignity of risk to empower individuals receiving aged care support. Lastly, we’ll examine the vital role of aged care workers in encouraging individuals’ choice and decision-making, ensuring their preferences are respected while aligning with the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.

5. Incident Management and Reporting – SIRS

In this course, you’ll discover the purpose and framework of the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS), including the eight reportable incident types, reporting procedures, and compliance requirements. You’ll learn to identify reportable incidents using the decision support tool, review common examples, and analyse a scenario for deeper understanding. Lastly, we’ll explore incident management systems, their significance, and your role in monitoring trends, as well as compare two scenarios showcasing effective and ineffective implementations.

6. The Mealtime and Dining Experience

In this course, you’ll learn about the importance of the mealtime and dining experience for ageing individuals in supporting their nutritional needs. Firstly, you will explore the challenges of ageing and how weight loss increases the risks of falls and infections. Next, you will discover the importance of respecting food preferences, cultures, and dietary needs while involving ageing individuals in menu planning to ensure tasty and nutritious meals. Then, you will learn how to create a positive dining experience. Lastly, you’ll learn the roles of aged care workers, dietitians, and speech pathologists in meal delivery and appetite monitoring for health in residential aged care facilities and home care.

7. Falls Prevention and Management

In this course, you will learn about fall prevention, focusing on identifying and reducing risks. You will explore fall impacts, including fear, and risk factors like inactivity, poor nutrition, and medications. You will learn your role in supporting assessments and working with healthcare teams. Strategies for prevention, such as environmental changes, proper footwear, exercise, and post-fall care, are explored to enhance safety and prevent falls.

8. Dysphagia, IDDSI & Management of Choking

In this course, you will learn to understand and manage dysphagia, a condition that causes major trouble swallowing food and drink. Firstly, we will explore its impact on nutrition, hydration, and health in aged care. We will identify risks such as stroke or dental issues, and consequences including malnutrition, choking, and reduced quality of life. Next, we will explore texture modification using the IDDSI framework to make swallowing safer. Then, we will examine respecting individual choices through the Eating and Drinking with Acknowledged Risk approach, while promoting independence with strategies like hand-under-hand feeding. Lastly, we will discuss first aid methods in responding to choking emergencies.

Medication Assistance and Administration

47. Assisting Individuals with Medication – Part 1

This course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals with their medication effectively. You will learn what medication is, the different types of medications, and the importance of medication reviews. We will then unpack the role and obligations of an aged care worker when assisting individuals with medication. Lastly, we will dive into Dose Administration Aids and review the common medication risks when supporting an individual. Lastly, you’ll learn best practices for handling, storing, and disposing of medication, as well as your role in monitoring and responding to medication-related incidents, including side effects, adverse events, and errors.

49. Antimicrobial Stewardship

In this course, you’ll gain an understanding of antimicrobial stewardship and its significance in all aged care settings. First, we will explore the critical role of antimicrobial stewardship in enhancing the Aged Care Quality Standards and gain an understanding of antimicrobial resistance, including its potential dangers to individuals. Next, we will look at antibiotic misuse, its categories, associated harms, and common misconceptions, including the consequences of antimicrobial resistance. Lastly, you will learn about the responsibilities of aged care workers, emphasising three key elements of care and proper antibiotic use.
