Within this course, you will learn how to provide supports for Children and Young People aged 9-18 years. We’ll first look at the prevalence and most common types of disability in this age group and explore best practice approaches to providing supports. Then, we’ll introduce Person-centred Thinking tools, stepping out how these tools can be used to understand the participant’s strengths, interests, and priorities for support. You’ll learn about key educational, medical, and developmental transitions children and families move through and what you can do to support them in navigating these transitions safely. Lastly, you’ll learn about the team supporting a child and their family, understand what allied health professionals can bring to the team, and explore your role as a Disability Support Professional within the team.

Outcomes

After this lesson you will be able to:

  1. Understand the prevalence of disability in people aged 9-18 years and recommended best practice approaches to support.
  2. Identify important transitions children and young people move through and key areas for support.
  3. Recognise the team around a child or young person and understand your role as a Disability Support Professional.
