This two-part course equips disability support professionals with essential knowledge and skills for effective medication management.
Part 1 introduces the basics of medication, types, and the significance of medication reviews, highlighting the role and responsibilities of support professionals and addressing common medication risks.
Part 2 builds on this foundation by teaching key medication safety principles through the “10 Rights” framework, detailing the phases of support, and outlining best practices for handling, storing, and disposing of medication. It also covers the professional’s role in monitoring and responding to medication-related incidents.

After this lesson you will be able to:
Part 1
1. Understand what medication is, identify the different types of medication, and recognise the importance of medication reviews.
2. Understand the role and obligations of a disability support professional when assisting a participant with medication.
3. Identify Dose Administration Aids and common medication risks.
Part 2
1. Understand key medication safety principles including the 10 Rights as a framework to reference when assisting participants with medication.
2. Describe the key phases of support and steps involved in assisting participants with medication based on the level of support they require.
3. Understand key responsibilities in your role to manage medication and recognise and respond to medication-related incidents.
