Within this course, you will learn how to support Children and Young People to communicate effectively. We’ll first look at what communication is, some skills required for effective communication, and understand why communication is considered a universal human right. Then, we’ll explore using person-centred approaches and tools to find out more about a child’s communication style, skills, and preferences for support. We’ll explore best practice approaches such as Total Communication and break down Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) approaches. You’ll learn about the role of Speech Pathologists and understand what you can do to be a supportive Communication Partner. We’ll explore visual supports in more detail and highlight some common examples of visual supports that can help children and young people build their independence in daily routines and navigate social situations. Lastly, you’ll learn about critical communication skills and the key role a Disability Support professional plays in supporting children and young people to develop valuable self-protective, functional, and social communication skills.

Outcomes

After this lesson you will be able to:

  1. Understand what communication is, and what skills are required for effective communication
  2. Align person-centred and best practice approaches to understanding and supporting a child or young person to communicate
  3. Recognise the value of Visual Supports and understand how they can be used
  4. Identify critical communication skills and understand your role in advocating for all children and young people to have a voice.
