In this course, you’ll develop a deeper appreciation for culturally safe care for Australia’s First Nations people. We’ll start by discovering the rich diversity among over 250 language groups, exploring their vibrant cultures and the vital connections to country, community, and kinship.
Next, we’ll explore the lasting impacts of colonisation, including trauma and systemic disadvantages faced by Stolen Generations survivors, and how these challenges influence Elders’ health.
Lastly, we’ll examine trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and person-centred approaches that help make Elders feel comfortable, maintain their independence, and enhance their overall well-being.

After this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  1. Discuss the First Nations culture, including its diverse histories, languages, and traditions.
  2. Describe the historical background and the enduring effects on First Nations peoples’ health.
  3. Demonstrate the learnt skills for culturally safe and respectful care of First Nations Elders.
  4. Practise culturally safe communication and care for First Nations Elders.
