This two-part course on manual handling covers essential techniques for safe and effective practice.

Part 1 introduces manual handling, relevant legislation, and risk management frameworks. It includes training on risk assessment tools, the hierarchy of control, biomechanical principles, and practical safety tips.

Part 2 focuses on the use of manual handling equipment, demonstrating how to assist participants with moving using tools such as transfer belts, hoists and slings, slide sheets, and transfer boards.

After this lesson you will be able to:

Part 1

1. State what Manual Handling is and know relevant legislation.

2. Explain how organisations and their employees use risk management tools to manage hazardous manual handling tasks.

3. Explain why it is beneficial to have a collaborative approach to risk management.

4. Show others what good manual handling looks like, aligned to biomechanical principles.

5. Share manual handling safety tips and steps you can take as a Disability Support Professional to keep you and others safe.

1. Assist a participant to move in a safe way

2. Recognise the different equipment/aids you might use

3. Explain when and how to use a transfer belt

4. Explain when and how to use a hoist and sling
